Today’s homeowners, by and large, want their kitchens to be open to the adjacent living areas. Parents want to be able to keep an eye on their children while they cook; hosts and hostesses want to feel like they are part of the action as they prepare food for a party; and many homeowners just like the look of a more open floor plan, which can make a home feel more spacious.

A common dilemma facing many Long Beach homeowners is that they really want to open up their kitchen area by taking out a wall, but they are nervous about losing all the storage space on that wall. One approach that is popular when this is a concern is to replace the wall with a large island with storage on both sides. We can often maximize the storage in the island by utilizing pull-out drawers or other innovative storage solutions. In some situations, we have also been able to extend the kitchen into an adjacent room–such as an unused dining room or an oversized living room. We may even be able to create an oversized pantry once the area is opened up. It’s all about using the space creatively and efficiently!
