Home design sure has changed over the past century! Think about homes built in the 1920s—or even the 1950s, for that matter. Homes built back then came with very little storage space and were very compartmentalized. There were no “great rooms,” and even master suites—with full bathrooms attached to the master bedroom—were few and far between. Since televisions didn’t make their way into the average residence until the early 1950s, living rooms weren’t designed around watching movies, sports, or television shows like they are now. Instead, the living room fireplace was often the focal point of the room. Kitchens didn’t have built-in microwaves or dishwashers and were often not open to the rest of the house.
Of course, many older homes in Long Beach and Rossmoor have slowly been renovated over the years. Maybe a kitchen wall was taken down to open up the space to the adjoining areas, or a built-in entertainment unit was added to a living room. However, when renovations are done in a piecemeal style—often by multiple homeowners—the home doesn’t really have a cohesive look and feel. When this is the case, certain ambitious homeowners decide to take on a whole-home remodel.
A whole-home remodel often involves touching most of the surfaces and fixtures in the home. The kitchen and bathrooms are typically gutted, all of the flooring is changed out, and the windows and doors are upgraded. Sometimes, the home’s layout is changed as well. Walls are moved or removed completely to create a floorplan that is more suited to a modern family’s needs. In some cases, a whole-home remodel can even include adding a second story to a one-story house, or an addition to the back of the house to provide homeowners with additional square footage.
Scott McKee Construction has completed multiple whole-home remodels in Long Beach and Rossmoor over the years. We love to help homeowners upgrade and update their homes to suit their specific needs and provide them with a space that they can enjoy for many years to come! Although many of our clients have specific reasons for needing more space or better-appointed spaces—like a growing family or an elderly family member who will be moving in—other clients just want a home that feels more like “them.” They want a home that is a reflection of their personality and values. This might mean a home that’s built for entertaining friends and family or one that is the “hang out house” for their kids’ friends. Or it could mean a space that is a sanctuary from their hectic work lives.
