Is building an accessory dwelling unit (commonly known as an ADU) on your property in Long Beach or Rossmoor on your list of goals for this year? If so, finding an experienced ADU contractor should also be on your list!
If you haven’t already heard, the State of California has required that cities loosen their restrictions to allow more homeowners to build ADUs on their residential properties. This means that just about any homeowner with the space on their property can build a secondary unit to rent out or use for their own purposes.
Currently, both Rossmoor and Long Beach, CA allow single-story ADUs up to 1,200 square feet, which is a nice-sized little house for an individual, couple, or even a small family. Of course, you may not want a structure that large in your backyard. The good news is, you can build a really nice 800-900-square foot ADU that will make a great home for someone, or even a 500-square foot studio, fit for a young professional or college student.
Some cities in the area have several pre-approved ADU plans from which you can choose. Long Beach is one of those cities. There are already seven pre-approved ADU plans, with more to come. If you like any of those pre-approved plans, you would purchase the construction documents directly from the designer. Purchasing one of these plans can save you time, since they have already been through the city’s Pre-Approved Accessory Dwelling Unit Program. If you choose to have a custom ADU designed for your property, you will have to submit those plans to the city’s Community Development Department for review and approval.
If you have a good idea of what you want in an ADU, and none of the pre-approved plans fit the bill, the team at Scott McKee Construction can help you draw up plans for a custom ADU. We will take into account how you want your ADU to look on the outside, how the interior will be laid out, and what amenities it will have. The layout and amenities of your ADU will be determined by how it will be used. Will you be renting it out to tenants, using it as guest accommodations for visiting family members, or using it to house an aging family member or young adult child? The answer to this question will allow us to design and build an ADU that will be perfect for your specific needs. We are also happy to work with the local architect of your choice, should you choose to have an architect draw up the plans for you.
Once your plans are approved, Scott McKee Construction can turn them into reality! Our team is highly skilled and adept at completing projects in a timely manner. We never overpromise and underdeliver, like so many other general contractors in the area seem to. Instead, we work hard to exceed your expectations!
