Kitchen remodeling projects come with a lot of decisions that need to be made by homeowners. One of the first decisions they need to make is what style they want for their new kitchen. For many years now, a popular style for kitchens has been the Modern Farmhouse style, which includes white Shaker-style cabinets, white countertops (Carrara marble or white quartz are popular choices), and a tile backsplash (often subway tile). That style is still a favorite for many of our clients, but we are starting to see a shift back to natural wood cabinets, with many people choosing options like White Oak for their kitchen cabinetry, and using granite, quartz, or marble slabs for backsplashes instead of tile.
Since the popularity of various styles comes and goes, it’s important to ask yourself before you take on a kitchen remodel: Do I care if my new kitchen is perfectly “on trend?”
In general, we would advise homeowners to design their kitchen in a style they love—whether that style is currently popular or not. After all, it’s their home and they’re the ones who will be living in it on a daily basis. However, that being said, there are a few other things to keep in mind when choosing a style for your Orange County kitchen remodel.
How Long You Plan to Stay in Your Home
If your current home is almost certainly your “forever home” (or will be the place in which you live for the foreseeable future), then our previous advice stands: have your kitchen designed in whatever style makes you happy! If you love all things Tuscan, make your kitchen a beautiful Tuscan showpiece. If you love—and have always loved—a clean, white kitchen, go for it! Don’t worry that people are telling you that white kitchens are “out.”
On the other hand, if you think you could possibly put your home on the market in the next few years (or if you’re remodeling the home for the purpose of reselling it), it would be wise to keep the current trends in kitchen remodeling in mind. That way, you are more likely to get top dollar when you go to sell.
The Style of the Rest of the Home
Most homeowners like to have a cohesiveness to their home. They want everything to flow nicely from room to room and from the exterior of the home to the interior. For this reason, it makes sense that the style of your kitchen not be too much of a departure from the style of the rest of your home. A Spanish-style home with a Modern Farmhouse kitchen could feel odd, as could a Mid-Century Modern home with a French Country kitchen.
As you design your new kitchen, keep in mind how it will tie in with its surroundings.
