Does a General Contractor Help with the Design of a Home Remodel or New Home Build?
The design of your home remodel or new home build is an important first step in the building process. After all, it’s the design on the blueprints that will be followed. If it’s not well thought out or doesn’t take all of your needs and wants into consideration, no amount of finishing materials will compensate. It would be like putting lipstick on a pig, as the saying goes.
For a large home remodeling project or a new home build, you’ll likely want to hire an architect to do the design, since their specialty is space planning and big-picture design. They will think about things like the flow from room to room and how each space will be used. They will have creative ideas for things like how to make a room feel more spacious or how to get the most out of your square footage, if you aren’t able to expand your home’s footprint.
For smaller remodeling projects, a general contractor with an eye for design and layout could be able to help you with what you need. For example, if you just want to add on a master suite to the back of your house, and you have a good idea of what you want, a general contractor may be able to draw up the plans for you.
We believe that at Scott McKee Construction, we stand out among most of the general contractors in Orange County in that we are truly able to help homeowners with design. Not only do we have a passion for building design, but we have the ability to come up with creative solutions for homeowners who want to reimagine their homes.
That being said, we are also happy to work with a client’s architect to execute their design ideas. We have no problem working off of the plans put together by an architect and working to their exact specifications. If a homeowner wants us to build their home exactly how their architect has designed it, we will do that. However, if we see something that we think can be improved upon, we will bring it to the homeowner’s attention. Architects are great, but they don’t always think of everything. As contractors, we often have a different perspective and know how certain design ideas can turn out in real life. We have found that some of our best completed projects were those that had combined input from the architect, the homeowner, and our general contracting company.
